Senate Report 2018/19 for UBC Library

UBC Library’s Senate Report is an annual digital publication that is created by my team, Library Communications and Marketing, to highlight the various milestones we achieve in a fiscal year. We promote and share this publication through a landing page that we recreate annually, a downloadable PDF, social media assets, and a presentation deck.

Leading the curation of visuals

For the 2018/19 Senate Report, it was very important for me to curate visuals that would show the diversity fo the Library. Specifically, I wanted to avoid using typical images associated with libraries – veteran employees, notices to stay quiet, and books.

I captured and selected the cover photo, to give an immediate impression that UBC Library goes beyond books. Rather, we adapt and think about the needs of the users. The cover image features two students interacting with one of four Tom Lee pianos that’s been donated to the Library.

Compared to previous Senate Report publications, this year’s visuals are – for the most part – original.

Leading the photography

Being the lead photographer during the whole fiscal year was particularly beneficial when curating the visual content for the 2018/19 Senate Report. Throughout the year, I was able to envision the kind of photos we needed that would best suit the layout. Compared to previous years, most of the photos and graphics are original.

Developing the infographics

Following suit from last year’s social infographics, I maintained the overall look and feel. However, because of the increased volume of original photos and Library coverage, I updated the assets to be more dimensional by subtly incorporating photos that are connected to the infographic topics we were focusing on.
